He Is a Lawyer
Emhoff, who has been married to Harris since 2014, is a New York native. According to reports, he has spent most of his life in California, where he studied and met his wife.
He also works as a lawyer in California and is reportedly a partner at DLA Piper Law Firm. He is known to represent large domestic and international corporations as well as individuals. He has indeed made waves in the legal sector thanks to his high-profile works in the industry.
He Has Two Kids from a Previous Marriage
Emhoff is Harris' very first husband, but that is not the same for him. His previous marriage produced two children: a son, Cole, and a daughter, Ella. Harris takes her stepmother duties rather seriously and makes sure to separate time for them to bond as a family.
Cole is reportedly a graduate of Colorado College, while Ella studied Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design. Aside from the apparent intimacy between both kids and their parents, very little is known about them as they stay away from public scrutiny.
Douglas and Harris's First Date
The beautiful couple first met in 2013 on a blind date set up by PR consultant Chrisette Hudlin. At the time, Harris was already serving as California's attorney general, but that didn't hinder their attraction to each other. The relationship turned very serious, and after about one year of dating, they got engaged.
Now, Emhoff, who is Jewish, never tires of flaunting their perfect relationship on social media. His Instagram feed contains fond photos that capture fond memories between him and Harris.

They Held a Private Wedding Ceremony
"Can confirm: We met, fell madly in love (still are), got married and continue to live very happily ever after," Emhoff once tweeted, and they sure are living up to it.
That can perhaps be attributed to the fact that the pair have a lot in common, and that includes treasuring privacy. While many politicians may have opted for an elaborate ceremony, Harris chose to have a sweet private service.
She wore a soft gold dress, and a cellist played in the background while the couple exchanged handwritten vows.

He's Very Supportive of Harris's Political Ambitions
Some men may find it very difficult to match up to a wife as publicly significant as Harris, but not Emhoff. He is very active on Instagram and makes sure to use it to express support for his wife of many years.
This seemingly undying support is what has made some label him the perfect political spouse on social media. A few years ago, he made headlines after he was spotted helping escort a protester who had interrupted one of Harris' appearances off the stage. How sweet is that!?

Harris's Past Relationship with Montel Williams
Before marrying Emhoff, Harris had a brief relationship with former daytime talk show host Montel Williams in the early 2000s. Though their romance ended decades ago, Williams recently opened up about their past and the media frenzy surrounding old red carpet photographs of the pair.

Speaking on the YouTube series "On Par with Maury Povich" in a July 6, 2026 episode titled "Why Montel Williams Really Walked Away from His Daytime Talk Show," Williams reflected on their time together and why things ultimately didn't last.
Addressing the viral resurgence of their old photos, Williams shared his perspective on embracing his dating history. "But you know, you can't erase your past. You embrace your past. I didn't think that it was going to work out," Williams stated.
