This condition, known as edema, happens when excess fluid builds up in the tissues of the lower legs and feet.

As people age, circulation can become less efficient, making fluid retention more likely. Slower blood flow allows fluid to collect in the ankles and feet, leading to visible swelling and discomfort. Poor circulation is one of the most common causes, especially for those who sit or stand for extended periods. A balanced diet with reduced sodium and adequate hydration supports healthy fluid balance.
