Woman Speaks Out After Assault by Man Posing as Taxi Driver

A woman in Scotland has spoken publicly about the emotional impact of being assaulted by a man who pretended to be a taxi driver after a night out in Glasgow.

The incident took place in August 2022. The woman, whose identity has been protected and who is referred to here as “Sophie,” believed she was entering a legitimate taxi to return home safely after spending time with friends.

After dropping off another passenger, the driver reportedly took Sophie to a nearby property instead of her intended destination. Authorities later confirmed that the man, identified as Barzan Nawshowani, assaulted her.

The case led to criminal charges, and the offender was initially sentenced to six years in prison. Following an appeal, the sentence was increased to eight years, along with an extended period of supervision after release.

Speaking about the experience, Sophie said she continues to believe the punishment should have been longer because of the seriousness of the crime.

The case has also drawn attention to updated sentencing guidelines in Scotland involving serious violent and sexual offences.

According to reports, Sophie became concerned during the journey when the vehicle stopped far from her home. She later recalled feeling unsafe and unsure of how to respond in the situation.

After the assault, she contacted a friend, who encouraged her to report the incident to police. Authorities arrested the suspect within days.

Sophie later described the emotional challenges that followed, including fear, anxiety, and the difficulty of discussing the incident with family members. She also spoke about the stress of participating in court proceedings and giving evidence during the trial.
