The 3 Types of Breakfast That Could Damage Your Kidneys
Next, I’ll talk about three types of breakfasts that, although common at many tables, could be affecting your kidneys more than you imagine.
1. Breakfasts loaded with cold cuts and processed meats
A classic breakfast with sausages, bacon, ham, mortadella may sound
delicious and practical, but it’s one of the worst choices when it comes
to kidneys. These foods are often full of sodium, preservatives, and
saturated fats. Excess salt is the silent enemy of kidney health, as it
forces the kidneys to work extra hard to filter blood and control blood
pressure. Over time, this overload can damage them irreversibly.
In addition, the phosphates and additives present in sausages alter the
balance of minerals in the body, affecting bones and arteries. Eating
once in a while is not a problem, but when they become a regular part of
breakfast, they pose a risk. Ideally, you should replace them with lean
proteins such as eggs, chicken breast or even legumes.
2. Breakfasts based on refined flours and added sugars
White breads, biscuits, biscuits and sugary cereals seem quick and
practical to get by in the morning. The problem is that they are a sugar
bomb and simple carbohydrates that sharply raise blood glucose. Not
only does this increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, but over time, it
directly compromises kidney function.
When blood sugar stays consistently high, your kidneys must work harder
to filter your blood. In the long term, this can lead to chronic kidney
disease. As if that were not enough, breakfasts with excess sugars are
usually accompanied by trans fats (such as in donuts or industrial
pastries), which increases inflammation in the body. The recommendation
is to opt for whole grains, oatmeal, fresh fruits, and natural
sweeteners instead of relying on ultra-processed products.
