How to Pick a Perfectly Sweet Watermelon: Easy Tips at a Glance

by

Introduction

Choosing the perfect watermelon can sometimes feel like a hit or miss, especially when you’re looking forward to that juicy, sweet bite. However, with a few simple tips, you can pick a sweet watermelon almost every time, ensuring that each slice is as delicious as you hope. Here’s how you can become an expert at selecting the best watermelon from the bunch.

Visual and Physical Clues for Sweetness

  1. Look for the ‘Field Spot’: The field spot is the area where the watermelon rested on the ground as it was growing. Look for a watermelon with a creamy yellow or even slightly orange field spot. A white or light green spot often indicates under-ripeness.
  2. Check the Weight: Pick up the watermelon; it should feel heavy for its size, which indicates it’s full of water and likely to be juicy and sweet.
  3. Examine the Shape: Opt for a watermelon that is uniform in shape. Oddly shaped watermelons might be an indication that they grew unevenly, potentially affecting their taste and ripeness.
  4. Sound Test - Tap It: Give the watermelon a tap or knock. A ripe, sweet watermelon will have a deep, hollow sound. Underripe or overripe melons tend to have a duller thud.
  5. Check the Texture - Inspect the Rind: The rind of the watermelon should be relatively hard and not easily scratched. A firm rind indicates that the watermelon isn’t overripe.
  6. Look for Sugar Spots and Webbing: Sugar spots and webbing (the brown, web-like streaks on the skin) are signs that sugars have seeped out and that the watermelon is sweet.

Storage and Usage Tips

  • Once you bring your perfectly picked watermelon home, keep it in a cool place. Refrigerate it once cut, and try to use it within a few days for the best flavor.
  • Watermelon is fantastic on its own, or you can add it to salads, blend it into smoothies, or juice it for a refreshing drink.

Conclusion

With these handy tips, you’ll be able to choose a deliciously sweet watermelon with confidence. Remember to look for a good field spot, check the weight and shape, tap for a hollow sound, and inspect the rind and skin. Mastering these tips will make your next trip to the grocery store or farmer’s market a breeze, and you’ll be enjoying sweet, juicy watermelon in no time. Happy watermelon picking!

Ham & Cheese Roll-Ups Recipe

These Ham & Cheese Roll-Ups, crafted from just three essential ingredients and wrapped in pizza dough, are a testament to the joy of simplicity in the kitchen. Perfect for those moments when time is of the essence but the craving for something homemade and comforting won’t subside, this recipe merges the ease of preparation with the timeless appeal of ham and cheese. Whether you’re gathering friends for a casual get-together or seeking a satisfying snack, these roll-ups promise to please without the hassle.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound pizza dough (homemade or store-bought, brought to room temperature for easier handling)
  • 12 slices smoked ham (thinly sliced for easy rolling)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (or experiment with Gruyere, Swiss, or smoked provolone for different flavors)

Preparation:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper for a non-stick surface.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle, aiming for about 1/4-inch thickness. This will be your base for the roll-ups.
  3. Lay the ham slices evenly across the dough, leaving a small border around the edges to ensure a tight roll. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the ham, creating a layer of melty goodness.
  4. Carefully roll the dough from one of the long edges, similar to making a jelly roll. Ensure the roll is tight so the fillings stay snug within.
  5. With a sharp knife, cut the log into 1-inch sections. This will form your individual roll-ups. Place them cut side up on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Transfer the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the roll-ups are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
  7. Allow the roll-ups to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to let the cheese set slightly.

Variations & Tips:

  • Spice It Up: Incorporate red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce into the cheese for guests who appreciate a spicy twist.
  • Vegetarian Option: For a meat-free variation, replace the ham with sautĂ©ed spinach and mushrooms, ensuring they’re well-drained to avoid soggy dough.
  • Garlic Butter Finish: For an extra layer of flavor, brush the roll-ups with melted butter mixed with garlic powder before baking.
  • Resting Dough: If you’re working with refrigerated dough, let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before rolling out. This makes it easier to handle and shape.

Family German Chocolate Cake

Family German Chocolate Cake

This is seriously one of the best low-carb/keto recipes I’ve ever made! Great taste and perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth without the carbs.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (4 ounce) bundle sweet baking chocolate (like Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate), broken into pieces
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • 1 cup margarine, softened
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • ¼ cup margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ⅓ cups sweetened flake coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. Place the pieces of chocolate into the boiling water and stir until the chocolate has melted; set aside to cool.
  3. In a large bowl, beat 1 cup of softened margarine with 2 cups of sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in 4 egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and the chocolate-water mixture until fully blended.
  5. Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt into a bowl. Beat the flour mixture into the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, in 3 or 4 additions. Beat until the batter is smooth, about 1 minute.
  6. In a metal or glass bowl, beat the reserved egg whites until they hold stiff peaks when the beaters are lifted straight up. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the batter, maintaining as much volume as possible. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven until the cakes are lightly browned and a toothpick inserted into the center of a cake comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans before removing.
  8. To make the frosting, pour the evaporated milk into a large saucepan, and mix in 1 cup of sugar, 3 egg yolks, ¼ cup margarine, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in 1⅓ cups sweetened flake coconut and 1 cup chopped pecans. Let the frosting cool to room temperature before spreading it on the cooled cakes.
